I am walking in honor of my precious Twin Baby A, my Heart Warrior Princess, Jahniyah, to raise awareness for HLHS and congenital heart disease and to support other families facing this heartbreaking journey.

It’s amazing how you can go through life never hearing about certain conditions until one day, they completely change your world.

During my twin pregnancy, at around 20 weeks, we learned that Baby A, our daughter Jahniyah , had a critical congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). The left side of her heart had not developed properly, meaning she would be born with only half of a functioning heart.

From that moment, my heart was shattered. I immediately began preparing for the difficult journey ahead. We were told Jahniyah would need multiple heart surgeries and would likely face a lifetime of medical challenges.

But our journey became much harder than we ever imagined.

After Jahniyah was born, she experienced serious complications. Her blood pressure remained dangerously low, she needed blood transfusions, and doctors discovered that the right side of her heart was leaking fluid. She was unable to receive the surgery she needed and instead required a heart transplant, so she was transferred three hours away to a hospital equipped to care for her.

One of the hardest parts of my journey was that after my C-section, I wasn't able to properly see or hold my baby girl. She was taken away immediately for medical care. I didn't get to truly see her for the first time until the day after she was born. As a mother, that is a moment I will never forget.

Despite everything, I held onto hope.

Then, on February 17th, Jahniyah’s condition suddenly became critical. Her heart began to fail. The doctors did everything they could, including performing chest compressions for 45 minutes, but they were unable to bring her back.

When I was told my baby girl was gone, it felt like my heart and soul left with her.

My sweet Jahniyah,

Mommy was ready to fight beside you for as long as it took. I wanted to give you every chance at life—a reconstructed heart, a new heart, whatever you needed. But God had another plan.

I will always wish I had more time with you. I wish I could have held you sooner and seen the beautiful little girl you would have become.

But I am forever grateful for the precious moments I did have with you. I heard your first cry, saw you move for the first time, and felt so much joy when you squeezed my finger. And although it was far too late, I was finally able to change your diaper for the first time on the day you left my side. Those moments will stay with me forever.

Although your time here was short, your life mattered, your story matters, and your memory will live on.
