2024 Philadelphia Congenital Heart Walk

On May 18th we will be participating in the 2024 Philadelphia Congenital Heart Walk at the Elmwood Zoo. We are raising money to support the advance of diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of congenital heart defects.

As many of you know, at 2 weeks old, Pierce had an undiagnosed congenital heart defect and went into cardiac arrest while at home. He was transported to Chester County Hospital and then immediately was transfered to Nemour Childrens Hospital in Delaware. After severeal tests, Pierece was diagnosed with a coarctation of the aortic arch. coarctation of the aorta is a congenital heart defect in which your baby's aorta (the largest artery in their body) is pinched, narrowing, or even closed. This restricts normal blood flow throughout the body. The follwoing morning Pierce underwent open heart surgery to have his Aorta opened back up and allow blood to flow through the body as normal. The surgery was a success and you would have no idea that he underwent this procedure. Although for now he is in the clear, Pierce will have to see a cadriologist for the rest of his life.
