On May 2nd, I will be walking with the Children's Heart Foundation again in Kings Park, with my great nephew, Jacob, leading the way. Jacob was born on February 24, 2020 with a complex CHD. He was born with 4 congenital heart defects. He had his first open heart surgery when he was just one week old in NYC and a second (the Glenn procedure) when he was five months old. Since then, he has had 3 Cardiac Catheterizations. His third surgery , the most recent, was in April 2023. In the Spring of 2024 , we discovered that Jacob will also need to go in for a 4th open heart surgery for a pacemeaker. He is now living and thriving with Fontan (single ventricle) anatomy. While we are not sure when this next step in his journey will be, we are sure that he will continue to be the toughest heart warrior we know. Jacob is a silly and sweet 6 year old. Jacob has the biggest personality, with such a genuine love for life.
He is also 1 in 100 people born with a CHD. And while that makes congential heart defects the #1 birth defect, it remains largely underfunded. To help us make a difference toward a cause that is so close to our hearts, please come walk with us, or donate,..not only to help us and the Children's Heart Foundation raise much needed funds, but to also show Jacob the love he has shown all of us!This year, I'm walking with extra purpose as The Children's Heart Foundation celebrates 30 incredible years of funding research that saves lives and changes futures. My commitment to making a difference has led me to participate in the Congenital Heart Walk, an event that carries immense significance for me—especially knowing that for three decades, CHF has been the leading force behind the treatments and surgical advances that help children with congenital heart defects thrive.
It's not just a walk; it's a stride toward the next 30 years of hope. This endeavor is all about supporting The Children's Heart Foundation's crucial mission—advancing the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of congenital heart defects through groundbreaking research that improves survival rates, reduces complications, and helps Heart Warriors celebrate more birthdays than ever before.
