After an uneventful pregnancy, our son Ethan was born in 2013 at nearly 8 lbs scoring a 9/9 on the Apgars. We settled in our room, introduced siblings and reveled in our sweet boy.
It wasn't until his 24 hour vitals that the pediatrician noticed his labored breathing following a failed pulse oximetry test. Later that day, after being transported to Cook Childrens, doctors confirmed Ethan has a rare congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome.
Ethan has undergone the 3 planned surgeries for those born with HLHS. He's thriving and you'd never know the battles he has fought by just looking at him.
The journey is not over.
We do not know what the future holds.
We do know that medical advancements have made it possible for Ethan to not just live but thrive.
The Children's Heart Foundation is dedicated to funding the research that helps give these babies longer, better lives.
