sophie’s story

Sophie was born with Tetralogy of Fallot. Her cardiologist recommended surgery to be done at CHLA. Sophie was transported via helicopter to Kaiser Sunset. The surgeon wanted to attempt to do repair through a blood vessel in her leg with a catheter but at two days old her vessels were too tiny. The surgeon then set out for open heart surgery at two weeks of age. During surgery, a murmur was patched and a cow vessel in place of a missing aorta valve. Sophie had her second open heart surgery at 8 months old to replace previous cow vessel. Sophie anticipates more surgeries in her future as she gets older and her heart outgrows the artificial aorta valve. sophie is 11 today and thriving thanks to research and community.
