1•17•2023 Jack was diagnosed with a heart condition called Aortapulmonary collateral artery & patent foramen ovale. Aortapulmonary Collateral Artery is when the heart grows extra arteries coming out of the heart to compensate for an area that may be underdeveloped to ensure proper blood flow where needed. (That’s my understanding at least) Jack also has Patent Foramen Ovale. PFO is a hole between the left and right atria (upper chambers) of the heart. This hole exists in everyone before birth, but most often closes shortly after being born. PFO is what the hole is called when it fails to close naturally after a baby is born. The condition is most important because it raises the risk for stroke. This is a CHD. CHD is a heart condition present at birth. It’s the most common birth defect. Affecting 1 in 100 babies. Sometimes it goes undiagnosed and gets missed in an anatomical scan while baby is still in utero. Right now Jack doesn’t require intervention. However, CHD is for life and he will be monitored closely to make sure nothing changes.
