We are walking for our son, Callahan. Our world changed when Callahan was born with several complex heart defects, including aortic arch hypoplasia, a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), and an Atrial Septal Defect (ASD). At just 19 days old, long before he could even hold his head up, Callahan underwent life-saving open-heart surgery to reconstruct his heart and aorta.
Watching your child go through something so monumental is a feeling that stays with you forever. However, watching Callahan’s resilience in the months since has been even more impactful. From that first major surgery to his most recent cardiac catheterization and balloon angioplasty to address aortic constriction, he has faced every challenge with a strength that inspires us daily. He is a true Heart Warrior, and he is the reason we are so committed to this cause.
Why We Walk Congenital Heart Defects (CHD) are the most common birth defect, affecting 1 in every 100 children. This year, the Children’s Heart Foundation is celebrating its 30th Anniversary. For three decades, they have been the leading force behind the research that creates the very surgical techniques and treatments that saved Callahan’s life.
We walk to ensure the next 30 years are filled with even more breakthroughs. Research is the difference between "what if" and "what’s next." It helps surgeons refine life-saving procedures, reduces long-term complications, and ensures that children like Callahan don't just survive, but truly thrive.
