Thank you for visiting our team’s page for our heart angel Sutton Harrington! This will be our third year walking and raising money to fund life saving research so families don’t have to say goodbye to their babies. I am a little late to the game this year, as our family has had another tumultuous year. However, I will never miss the opprotunity to remember Sutton, and support research.

We found out at 20 weeks that Sutton had a CHD during his anatomy scan. Between 20 weeks and 39 weeks I had 50 appointments with every specialist you can think of. We were told that this was a very survivable condition, and our odds were about 85%. At 39 weeks and 2 days, Trent and I went in for our scheduled induction and the next day we brought the most perfect 6 pound 12 oz baby boy that I’ve ever seen. We knew during his first week of life he would have a stint, a shunt, or the Norwood surgery (major open heart surgery). We were so relived on day four of life when we found out he would have the least risky option of a stint! It was supposed to be a simple heart cath procedure and once he was eating again good, we could go home. This blew every expectation out of the water for us!
On August 21st, he went back for his cath. Hopes were high and vibes were good thinking our baby boy would be back in his room in a few short hours. However, instead, this is where our nightmare began. During his heart cath they had a little “hiccup” where his heart went into afib. They fixed it quickly and completed the procedure without complications. Once he got back to his room, they couldn’t get his heart rate to rise. After several medications they determined they needed to use a pacing wire to stabilize the heart rate. During this bedside procedure, Sutton’s heart stopped and they had to shock him and give him CPR. After this, they determined ECMO was his best chance at survival.
After they put him on ECMO, he improved! They were hopeful. His brain function was still great. Shortly after, they did another echocardiogram and saw that his aortic valve had developed a severe leak. This caused a lack of blood flow to all of his other organs and his body began to shut down.
This is when Trent and I were confronted by a team of the world’s best doctors and faced with the decision of stopping care of our 8 day old baby. There was nothing else they could do for him, and the only thing keeping him alive is the ecmo machine.
Trent and I held him and told him how loved he was by so many people, even those he had never met. We told him everyone who would be waiting for him in heaven with open arms. We promised him that we would be strong beggar he was strong. On August 22nd at 3am our son went to his heavenly home to be with Jesus.
Our son Sutton Jay Harrington was a fighter beyond words and taught his momma and daddy more in 8 days then most learn in a lifetime. I am so honored to be his mom.
