Why I Support Gunpowder Valley Conservancy

Formed in 1989, Gunpowder Valley Conservancy (GVC) is a Baltimore County-based land trust and watershed restoration nonprofit. When you donate to my personal fundraising page, you are directly helping GVC expand their capacity to:

  • Preserve land so future generations can enjoy clean water and open spaces
  • Create diverse habitat that is resilient to climate change and supports pollinators
  • Reduce pollution to our drinking water reservoirs
  • Engage volunteers of all ages in meaningful stewardship activities
  • Connect homeowners and businesses to resources to take action for clean water on their property

I have volunteered with GVC for 8+ years as a reforestation crew chief, helping groups plant trees around the watershed. I've also helped with stream clean-ups, tree maintenance, and misc other efforts. Learn more about volunteering at a tree planting event.

  

Almost all of my local hiking is done within the Gunpowder Watershed - in land around the reservoirs and at county and state parks. Watershed hiking suggestions:

The Gunpowder Watershed includes the Prettyboy and Loch Raven Resevoirs and supplies most of the drinking water for Baltimore/Baltimore County water system.

The Explore the Gunpowder Watershed Challenge encourages participants to complete 45 miles of outdoor activity between May 1 and June 14. Forty-five miles is symbolic of the size of the Gunpowder Watershed (450+ square miles), our local connection to the Chesapeake Bay.
